Thiepval Memorial to the Missing

Situated at the village of Thiepval on the Somme this monument holds the names of 72,000 officers and men of the British and South African forces missing in action and with no known grave. Designed by Sir Edwin Luytens ( who designed the Cenotaph in London) the monument was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1932.

This sector of the Somme saw severe fighting with minimum gains and catastrophic losses from the 1st July 1916. The strategic point of Thiepval village was eventually captured by the end of September.
