Strand Military Cemetery

Strand Military Cemetery is located adjacent to Ploegsteert (or Plugstreet as it was nicknamed) Woods on the Messines Ridge outside Ypres. It holds the remains of 1,143 Commonwealth servicemen from WW1 and 8 burials from May 1940, men killed during the BEF retreat to Dunkirk.

The cemetery is located at the end of a trench of the same name and was completed after the armistice when bodies were brought in from outlying cemeteries and battlefields in the surrounding area. Of those interred, 354 are unidentified but there are special memorials to 6 who are known to be amongst them. There are also memorials to 13 whose graves were destroyed by shellfire.
